The Paloma Cocktail: A Refreshing Mexican Classic

The Paloma cocktail is a beloved Mexican drink that brings together the perfect blend of tequila and grapefruit soda, creating a refreshing and flavourful beverage.

This iconic cocktail has gained popularity around the world, and Christmas is no excuse to not partake in this delicious drink!

In this blog post, we'll explore the history of the Paloma, its traditional recipe, and a few festive variations to add a delightful twist to your celebrations this Christmas.

Origins of the Paloma

The exact origins of the Paloma are a bit hazy, but it is widely believed to have originated in Mexico. The word "Paloma" translates to "dove" in Spanish, and this cocktail is as light and refreshing as its namesake. Some credit Don Javier Delgado Corona, a legendary Mexican bartender, with creating the Paloma in the 1950's. Others believe it has been enjoyed in Mexico for much longer, passed down through generations.

Classic Paloma Recipe

- 50ml tequila blanco
- 25ml lime juice
- Pinch of salt
- Top with grapefruit soda
- Grapefruit wedge (for garnish)

1. Fill a glass with ice cubes.
2. Add tequila, lime juice, and a pinch of salt to the glass.
3. Top it off with grapefruit soda- we love Two Keys!
4. Gently stir the ingredients.
5. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge.

Festive Paloma Variations

1. Cranberry Paloma

Give your Paloma a festive twist with the addition of cranberry juice. The tartness of cranberries complements the sweetness of grapefruit soda, creating a perfect balance.

2. Spicy Paloma

Our favourite variation! Add a kick to your Paloma by incorporating a slice of jalapeño or a dash of hot sauce. The heat pairs surprisingly well with the citrusy and sweet notes of the cocktail. You can even decorate the glass with a chilli and sea salt or Tajin rim for extra spice and a beautiful garnish.

3. Pomegranate Paloma

Elevate your Paloma with the rich flavour of pomegranate juice. This variation not only adds a touch of elegance but also brings a burst of fruity goodness to the drink. Try Pom- available from most Supermarkets, or use a fresh whole pomegranate.

The Paloma cocktail, with its simple yet vibrant combination of flavours, has become a staple in the world of mixology. Whether you stick to the classic recipe or experiment with festive variations, the Paloma is sure to add a touch of Mexican flair to your celebrations.

So, grab your favorite tequila, some grapefruit soda, and get ready to savour the magic of the Paloma!
