We couldn't quite decide whether to call this a Real Passion Fruit Martini, or just a vodka smoothie. Either way, it's 100% delicious whilst being sugar-free and containing all the goodness from fresh mangoes, passion fruit and lime.....with a naughty touch of vodka.
Just how we like to do it!
The passion fruit martini (or Pornstar martini as it is otherwise known) is the UK’s bestselling cocktail, and has been so for the past 4 years. The cocktail was created in 2002 by bartender and infamous LAB bar founder Douglas Ankrah.
We’re not sure what makes it so special....but it works. The tropical flavours, the shot of fizz on the side, or the fact that you so often get a little nibble with it (half a passion fruit). It's the whole package.
It also contains a LOT of sugar. Passoa contains around 10g of sugar per 30ml. Leading passion fruit purees often used for this recipe in bars Nationwide are made up of 50% sugar and 50% fruit. Then there’s the added sugar from vanilla vodka or a vanilla sugar syrup, plus the sugar from the apple juice or pineapple juice, so often mixed with this cocktail.
All in all a Pornstar Martini will set you back between 16-25g of sugar per serving, and let's be honest...you never stick to just one.
It seems a shame that something so “fruity” could be so……..artificial.
And so, we’ve made our healthy version!
Give it a try, but be warned. It’s practically a smoothie with a shot of vodka. And it's super delicious.
Our very easy method:
- Chop 2 mangoes
- Slice in half 2 passionfruit, leaving one half to the side.
- Add 50ml vodka and the juice of half a lime.
- Scoop out the passionfruit and pop all the ingredients in a blender with a couple of ice cubes, and a splash of water to get it mixing.
- Blend and serve. Add half of passionfruit as a garnish.
It’s that simple. We loved it how it was, but depending on your taste you might want to add a bit of sweetness. For an even more authentic take on the ‘P-Star Martini,' we recommend adding 10ml of sugar-free vanilla syrup. These syrups are great for when you need that sweetened. They aren't good for you. But if you are avoiding refined sugars they are good to have in stock as a backup.
Strain into a chilled martini glass, and serve with a shot of fizz on the side.
That's a case of healthy hedonism at its finest!
