Coconut Margaritas? Yes please!

What good is National Margarita Day on a Monday? Ok ok, so it is lockdown, and there's not much difference in any of the days at the moment, but still.

With that in mind, we are having our Marg celebrations this weekend....and we're going all out with a trio of delicious delights- including a truly scrumptious coconut margarita. Yes please!

Whether you choose to get yours delivered straight to your door (we can help with that) or make them yourself, have a look at our top three favourite flavoured margaritas for some inspiration.

1. Picante

It’s a Soho House classic and for good reason - with a hint of herby freshness and a kick of spice, this margarita is a definite crowd-pleaser. Perfect for while it’s still cool outside - the fresh chili adds a surprising warming element to the cocktail. It’s also much simpler to make than it sounds. Aside from your basic margarita ingredients, all you need are some fresh chilies (red jalapeños work best) and fresh coriander.

To make, simply chop up a small handful of coriander as well as a red de-seeded chilli.

Add to a shaker and muddle. Add 60ml tequila (we love this Patrón Resposado), 15ml agave and 30ml fresh lime juice. Shake with ice and fine strain into a glass filled with ice.

You can add as much or as little chilli as you like, depending on your taste. Garnish with a lime wedge and half a chilli to be fancy.

2. Grapefruit Margarita

Grapefruit has a ton of health benefits and it’s tasty as hell! It's low in calories, and high in nutrients. It’s also high in antioxidants and is thought to help improve one’s immune system.

More good news about the grapefruit margarita is that you don’t need to move a muscle to get one. Mindful Mixology has crafted the perfect grapefruit margarita for you to enjoy without doing any of the hard work, or as the perfect gift for someone who you know loves a good margarita.

Our Grapefruit Margarita is made with tequila blanco, pink grapefruit syrup, organic orange blossom water, organic agave syrup, and citric acid.

By using the all-natural, organic and floral orange blossom, we've cut out the usual triple sec (orange liqueur) that is jam packed with sugar. Per serve, that’s only 133 calories and less than four grams of sugar (from the agave). Garnish with a slice of grapefruit to master the aesthetic perfectly.

Alternatively to make you own you can add together 100ml of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, 50ml of this delicious Pensador Mezcal (which has beautiful earthy undertones), 5ml orange blossom water, 1 tsp agave and 30ml lime juice. Shake hard with ice and pour into an ice filled glass, with a salt rim.

3. Skinny Coconut Margarit

For those lucky enough to have tried the Champagne Piña Colada at Coupette- this may just take you back. A combination of creamy, tropical, citrus and spritz. It’s a delicious, low-cal, tropical margarita that somehow still feels luxurious. What else could you possibly wish for?

All you need in addition to your basic margarita components are light coconut milk and some coconut water.

To make, we’d recommend only about one shot (25-30ml) of coconut water and coconut milk per drink. Shake together with 50ml of a decent tequila blanco (we love Patrón Silver), 25ml agave, 20ml of fresh lime juice and lots of ice. Blend together and pour into a chilled glass.

This cocktail is all about the garnish. We recommend rimming your glass with slightly toasted coconut flakes, and finishing with a dollop of coconut sorbet.

If you can get your hands on it, use a sparkling coconut water for this recipe. It cuts through the creaminess and tastes so good. Just make sure you add it at the end before you blend. We love this one by Remedy Drinks- it's a sugar-free raw coconut kefir and it's simply delicious.

The brilliant thing about margaritas is that they’re super versatile, so as long as you’ve got your tequila, lime juice, and either triple sec or agave syrup, you can have fun and add all sorts of things to your drink to elevate it. Got a mango in the fridge, and no idea what to do with it?

Blend it up and chuck it in with your margarita for some added flavour and health benefits! Cocktails aren’t static - if you like it, drink it!
