Healthier Alternatives to Sugar

Craving a Pornstar Martini, but trying to cut down on sugar? Never fear, sugar

alternatives are here!

Sugar, sugar, sugar… The classic love-hate relationship we all have!

As we’re all getting into, not only cocktail delivery, but making cocktails at

home ourselves, we realise just how much sugar we consume when

downing those classic cocktails! But there are decent alternatives to

simple sugar syrup that you can add to your cocktail to up the nutritional

merit a little bit, and perhaps even make it taste a bit better!

1. Agave Nectar

Agave is all the rage nowadays. A key ingredient in an all-time

favourite, the Tommy’s Margarita. Agave nectar can actually replace sugar

syrup in a load of other circumstances too. Agave contains vitamins B and

C, making it slightly more beneficial than regular sugar, and it has a very

low glycemic index, meaning it won’t cause your blood sugar to rise as fast.

It also contains less glucose than sugar.

Our Limited Edition Grapefruit Margarita uses agave nectar rather

than sugar syrup, and we’ve also substituted triple sec with orange blossom

water, reducing those calories and sugar content even further.  Even better, you

don’t even need to run out to the shops! Our premade cocktails have everything

ready for you; simply shake and serve.

2. Coconut Blossom

Coconut blossom, also known as coconut sugar, coconut nectar or coconut

syrup, is an up-and-coming alternative to regular sugar, and we love it! Coconut

blossom is high in amino acids, iron, magnesium, zinc, and potassium. It also has

a lovely caramelised flavour, which means that any cocktail you make will taste all

the more richer. Coconut blossom is less processed than table sugar and has a

lower glycemic index. Perfect for when you fancy a cheeky homemade cocktail,

but you ate too many Quality Streets the night before!

Our very own Salted Coconut Espresso Martini has the perfect amount of sweetness

but we’ve used a blend of organic coconut blossom sugar, coconut rum, and coffee liqueur instead

of processed sugar syrup to get you that hint of sweetness without raising your blood sugar!

3. Stevia

Stevia is an all natural nonnutritive sweetener, meaning that it contains very few

calories. It is also linked to numerous benefits, including lower blood sugar levels

and even (according to a recent study) lower cholesterol.

Stevia can be purchased from health food shops and supermarkets alike- and you

can create your own sugar syrup in the same way you would with regular sugar-

and substitute it in your cocktails.

The one thing to look out for is the amount of stevia in the products you find on

supermarket shelves. Many stevia products have very little stevia in them at all-

and don't use the whole stevia leaf. They’re sometimes made from a highly refined

stevia leaf extract called rebaudioside A (Reb-A), and blended with with different

sweeteners, such as erythritol (a sugar alcohol) and dextrose (glucose).

We use an organic liquid sweetener in a few of our cocktails; our Lychee MartiniElderflower

Gimlet and our new 'Alcohol-Free' Elderflower gimlet.

4. Maple Syrup

Maple syrup seems like it would be even less healthy than sugar, but

it doesn’t have to be! A little bit of maple syrup can go a long way. It

undergoes far less processing than most refined sugars. Furthermore, even

though it still contains a number of calories, on a gram-to-gram basis,

maple syrup carries more nutrients than processed table sugar. Some of its

hidden benefits are zinc, calcium, and potassium. It also has a lower

glycemic index than sugar. Make yourself an Old Fashioned but sub out the

sugar for a dash of maple syrup instead - trust us- it's delicious.
